Dhalsa – the Musical

‘Dhalsa’ is a feature film about divisions in the US and the challenges for any unification attempts. This is depicted using patriotic sentiments within dancers of different dance styles and identity crisis of Generation Z children of US immigrants. These divisions are woven inside a story of a dancer defying her social cultural borders while attempting to unite dancers of different dance styles using a ‘fusion’ dance style she creates. The story is supplemented by challenges of a cross culture romance and other ‘identity’ based vignettes.

The central character is Soni, a US born Indian in her early twenties, a very talented dancer who invents a new ‘fusion’ dance style to unite dancers of all styles which she names ‘Dhalsa’.  The story is about her aspirations, the challenges that she faces as she progresses in attempting to sell this idea to the dance clubs in New York overcoming the push back and patriotic sentiments from dancers of other styles. Alongside, she is faced with overcoming challenges of the narrow mindedness of the Indian community who remind her of her roots and the expectation of an Asian woman and the risk of losing her fiancé (whose family recently moved to US on a Business Visa) if she pursues dancing as a career.

The other major character is AJ, an Indian IT consultant on Work Visa and the challenges he faces as he pursues a romantic relationship with his co worker Susan an overly friendly American. Her overfriendliness with other males which he fears his parents will misinterpret and her unwillingness to tone it down has left him in despair with the impending visit of his parents from India to choose a bride for him. Other vignettes include the distaste of the Latino socialites of the Asian interference of their dance style, the separation of spouses due by immigration and the reminiscences of immigrants dreaming of returning to their motherland.

‘Dhalsa’ is a musical drama with original melodious songs composed as expressions to the powerful storyline. With appeal for Hollywood and Bollywood audiences, ‘Dhalsa’ will be released in English and Hindi to double the revenue potential. The songs which are mostly in Hindi will be subtitled for the Hollywood release and the dialogues which are in English will be lip synched for the Bollywood release.

Dhalsing’ The story continues…

AJ enjoys the marital bliss of a marriage with drop dead gorgeous Susan paying little attention to the heartburns of her experimental cooking. His philosopher friend and mentor Dheer is baffled at this inexplicable bliss of a huge sacrifice of independence – yet undefeated he continues his mentorship to Raj who now sober after the breakup with Soni decides to straighten up his life and break off from the lifelong ‘hand holding’ by his parents.

Soni‘s Mother exposes the ghosts of her past to regain her daughter’s love and the revelation makes Soni realize that she herself is walking that exact path. In the mix is a kleptomaniac whose life is being threatened by a bunch of local hoodlums and the ‘Dhalsites’ who fall innocent victims to his misdemeanors.

‘Dhalsing’ is a musical parody that has a Bollywood spice mix of romance, suspense and humor with electrifying original songs composed to match the bright storyline

The Lonely Path

‘The Lonely Path’ is the dramatization of surreal conflicts inside minds of teenagers as they grapple with the realities of cross cultures and tradition.

It is the story of the disillusions of a Dhalsa dance evangelist from USA visiting relatives in India to discover her Asian roots. Her involvement in the local romance tragedy leads her to the horror of discovery of displaced cultures.
